Food for Thought – Family and friends as support
Class,
It is helpful to have the support of family and friends to give you advice and wisdom as well as motivational support.
Is your family a means of support? Why or why not? If your family is not a place you can go, where can you turn to get that type of support? What has been your experience?
In the past, for me I have been parts of small groups, church groups, work colleague, and even study groups, which have filled a gap when needed.

I would like to develop a working relationship with the instructor, because i would like to feel comfortable going to them with my questions and concerns about class related issues. Also my counselor because i will need advice on What courses to take in order to reach the future i envisioned for myself career wise. Also engaging with other students can be vital because hearing from people starting off from the same spot-as me. And being able to bounce ideas off one another will be a very effective tool. And joining clubs that are focused on the career path I wish to have can only be a positive for me.

As a local student, I am very excited about all the possibilities of relationships at Grand Canyon University (GCU). I already have a great relationship with my counselor and look to develop that further. Additionally, I look forward to clubs that I can join. Particularly any outdoor clubs. I’m pretty good at making new friends, so getting along with other students will be pretty easy for me. What I need to work on is building relationships with professors. Doing so can give me a leg up with future jobs.

Academic relationships are key to success at any institution. With this being my second undergraduate degree I understand the overall importance of building these relationships and how they can be key to your success. To be honest, I was not the best at building relationships with my professors at my previous institution. Looking back on my experience it is something that I wish I took more of an initiative to do. As I reflect and look back I can say I only really got to know one or two professors in my first undergrad. I was always told to have a good relationship with professors, facility and your peers but I truly did not realize how much of a mistake it was not to until it was to late that I did not. These relationships would have been key to my success in understanding the material much better. I would have been able to use these relationships to have more study groups especially with peers. With professors, I would have felt more comfortable approaching them during class or office hours if I did not have an understanding of the material, needed extra help or wanted clarification on a certain grade. I plan to continue to message professors when I need clarification or a better understanding. I will be an active participant in discussions and see what others a are replying to my posts in order to understand all ideas of the material. If I miss points on an assignment I want to be able to ask why I missed points so I can learn for next time. Having an open line of communication will be better for future courses and developing longer lasting relationships.

Building a academic relationship is very important especially with faculty members, and university staff. They are the guidance you need as well as the ones who basically hold your future in there hands. Helps you to feel supported and makes it more comfortable to want to learn with less behavioral issues from students. Helps us to gain good relationship. They play a large role in your academic relationship as well as you do to them. When it comes to clubs and engagements, it helps you to build connections with others and even lifelong friendships. These relationships would be important to me especially while building my future by helping my to network. Clubs and student engagement will help me learn proper team working skills as well as how to network with others. Teach me about proper researching when it comes to information collecting and creating something useful. The most important is time management, without time management you’ll never be able to get things done to your fullest potential. So I know the academic relationships I’m gaining will be more than beneficial to me.
